WHEN Lian Pek Pybus arrived in the then thriving mining village of Brandon, Durham, the whole community turned out to see her. She was a naive 19-year-old, fresh off the plane from Malaysia, and expecting her very first child to boot. Leaving her family and the country she knew and loved behind, Lian came to the region in 1960 to start a new life with her Durham-born husband, Brian.
