AS we stepped out of Barbican Tube station, we felt like we'd encountered a cross between the Byker Wall and the Get Carter car park.

Apartment blocks of different shapes and sizes, most of them concrete and dark-grey in colour, sprawled in front of us and the prospect of navigating our way through the thing had our heads spinning.
