JA of Gateshead, letter January 29, takes exception to "Royals on silly jaunts". The mystique about the Royal family is long gone, the respect in which it was held has largely diminished. With no real power their function is to set an example to us commoners and in this they have failed miserably.
We taxpayers do foot the bill for the Royals but we should remember what they do, perhaps incidentally, to encourage tourists. It could also be argued their various peccadillos, and faux pas, have added some spice to their stories which has generated what might be called a prurient interest among visitors.See the full content of this document
