Despite awful conditions, athletes still managed to rewrite the record books in a number of events at the two-day North Eastern Counties Track and Field Championships at Gateshead Stadium.

Pride of place went to Gateshead Harrier Niall Flannery, who used his home track to full advantage to pick up four titles - as well as setting a new record in the 400 metres hurdles.

Competing in the under-17 age group, Flannery also won the steeplechase, high jump and 100m hurdles - but it was his performance over one lap which had excellence stamped all over it.
