HUNDREDS of North East jobs could be on the line after three retail giants announced major cutbacks today. Chocolate-maker Thorntons dealt a blow to the High Street by announcing plans to close up to 180 stores.

The company has 17 outlets across Northumberland, Tyneside and County Durham, including three in Newcastle city centre.
