Thoughts From a Sundial Sitting [ ... ]

Summary

THOUGHTS FROM A SUNDIAL SITTING on a sundial, having your photograph taken can be pretty uncomfortable. But when you are two years old and your parents demand it, well you just do it. After all, you know the reward could be an ice-cream cornet and it's a fair deal. It happened to me long ago and the result is pasted in our family album along with two others. My Uncle Billy held me on the sundial. Twenty years before, he had his photograph taken sitting there. He was held by his uncle Tom just back from the First World War. The setting was the Prince's Parade, Bridlington, and 20 years before that Tom himself sat on the sundial held by his uncle back from the South African War. The sundial was destroyed by enemy action in the Second War.

In the three photographs, the sun is always in the same place and, though costumes change, the family expressions never vary. This link across the years may give you a clue as to where I am coming from. I love tradition and continuity. I feel secure having the support of the family around me, though now scattered across the country, down the years and into the next life.
