But to older generations in the North East the word means marbles. Similarly, not many children may know that if someone is oilin' his wig, it means he's drinking heavily. Or what it means if someone calls you a hinny or a marra.

These are just some Geordie words academics are trying to preserve before they die out.

Dr Bill Lancaster, director of the Centre for Northern Studies at Northumbria University, has been researching the subject for seven years.
