Summary


LES May should remember that Russia has history when it comes to states or regions wanting to break away from its control. Hungary in 1956 and Czechoslovakia in 1968 are two examples of when red army tanks and troops stamped on democracy and bloodily brought people and governments to heel. In the last 10 years or so Chechnya tried to break away from Russia, but after two bloody wars it had to capitulate.

When Georgia tried to retake its region of South Ossetia, Russia intervened saying the region should be allowed to decide if it wants to be independent of Georgia and it has encouraged Abkhazia to do the same. This year Russia also condemned Kosovo, its neighbours, for wanting to be independent from Serbia.
