I would like to take to task P ROBERTS of Jarrow (Your Shout, June 4) for his comments regarding pensioners snubbing free travel.

Many would benefit from such a move but the reason they are refuting this offer is because it is going to be financed by extra council tax on other citizens, which is not what any pensioner wants. Any concession should come from central government. This is a disgraceful way of alienating pensioners from the rest of the community.
