JUST 85 people were arrested in Sunderland city centre on New Year's Eve.

Extra police and CSOs were on patrol in the city centre and surrounding areas, during what is usually one of the busiest nights of the year. Between 7am on December 31 and 7am January 1, 2010, there were 488 reported incidents across Sunderland and 85 people arrested, 44 for public order or drunkenness offences.
