OBVIOUSLY your correspondent Les May of Gateshead (EC Dec 6) has a good recollection of the appalling spells of weather this country experienced in 1941 and 1947.

But contrary to his assumption that I wasn't around at the time, I would inform him that having joined the RAF early in 1941, I was whisked off to Canada during that year's bad spell to experience severe temperatures at No33 Air Navigation School in Ontario, where frostbite was a great concern and four feet deep snowdrifts a common concern. Despite the severe hazards of flying, it was rare for the Avro Anson aircraft to be grounded for more than a few days due to the well-organised, high-efficiency snow shifters used by the Canadians.
