Summary
A MOLECULAR link has been found between Alzheimer's disease and chronic heart failure. Scientists believe the conditions involve a build-up of harmful protein.
In heart muscle, clusters are formed of desmin amyloid proteins. They are similar to the beta-amyloid plaques in the brain believed to play a key role in Alzheimer's. Desmin is a protein that forms structural filaments in heart muscle cells, while amyloids are misshapen lumps of protein deposited in tissues. Researchers made the discovery in dogs, but have also found the altered desmin in four heart failure patients. The new US findings were presented at a scientific meeting of the American Heart Association in Orlando, Florida.See the full content of this document
