WITH reference to the letter from Geoff Platt, 'Youth Clubs Could Solve Problems', I have been saying that for years but it's got worse since this Lib Dem council took control in Newcastle in 2004. There has been a rapid decline in youth activities both from the local government point of view in Newcastle and the voluntary situation and the tightening of grants all round. It is very much true what was said in that particular letter, because in 1956 the youth clubs were going strong and here we are seeing the decline of others - the closure of Dockray House in Sunderland Avenue is an example.
As the Chief Constable of Northumbria said when he addressed the council and a question was asked by Coun George Johnson re. when the community police are gathering the under-age drinkers together from inappropriate places like St George's playing fields in Fenham, where do you take them.See the full content of this document
