THE recession has meant tough times for pubs across the country as people have less money to spend on nights out.

Landlords are increasingly having to think of new ideas to attract customers through their doors. Back in January 1975, Newcastle's then newest bar refused to sell beer! Instead, it served wine and provided customers with chess boards and female opponents in the shape of barmaids.
