More evidence of a war against motorists emerged this week, including a garage owner being fined pounds 800 because of the wind. He runs a filling station in rural Northumberland and instead of advertising fuel at the correct price of 89.9 pence per litre, his sign inadvertently displayed a price of 79.9p.

This resulted in a motorist being charged about pounds 3 more than she expected for a tankful of fuel, so she complained to trading standards.
