GRIEF may have turned a hardworking husband into a wife beater without warning.

Alexander Smith was a popular family man wellliked and respected by workmates at the council depot where he was a supervisor. But he suddenly snapped as he walked home from a normal night out in Whitley Bay, shouting vile abuse at wife Paula, dragging her down the street by her hair, and even kicking her as she lay helpless on the ground.
