Summary


Proposals to give a future to a training centre which specialises in mine rescues are under consideration by the Government.

The Mines Rescue Centre, in Houghton-le-Spring, employs 10 full time professionally trained rescuers and two other staff members. It is one of only seven across the country, all based near current or former pit sites and expert in rescuing miners trapped underground.
