Flights of Fancy Now Our Heritage

No skilled designers worked on it for months - it was built by two miners within a fortnight.

Yet this pigeon cree in Sunderland is ranked alongside some of the country's most distinctive buildings. It is the pride and joy of pigeon-fancier Maurice Surtees; he and his late brother, William, built it in 1955 and painted it in the colours of the Union Flag.
