Summary
BY NOW, most of the preparation for sowing as well as planting out has finished for the moment and we await the first crops from our labours. We've actually had some early onions and carrots from pots sown in March in the greenhouse. A task that can (but shouldn't!) get neglected at this time of year is to check on the state of the compost heaps around the plot.
All heaps do their most rapid decomposing at the height of summer and they need a look over. Almost all heaps will need turning before long. The most well-rotted can have the best bits removed and stored in sacks for use with the late summer and autumn crops. The fresher material should be replaced in one of the bins and added to with any material not yet fully rotted from your number two heap. For best results, the heaps also need two external additives. One is water. The materials must never be allowed to dry out.See the full content of this document
