ALZHEIMER'S risk in old age can be greatly reduced by taking exercise and eating a Mediterranean diet, research suggests. Both lower the chances of suffering the most common form of dementia, and together they reduce the risk by 60%, say scientists. Scientists in the US looked at a community of 1,880 elderly New Yorkers with an average age of 77. Participants were interviewed about their levels of physical activity and dietary habits and then monitored for about five and a half years.
Researchers found that those who were physically active were 33% less likely to suffer Alzheimer's. Close adherence to a Mediterranean diet rich in fruits, vegetables, cereal and fish, but low in red meat and poultry, was associated with a 40% risk reduction.See the full content of this document
