ON the evening of May 16, 1943, the specially formed 617 Squadron flew 19 Lancaster bombers out of their base at RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire.

As the men took off that night, carrying with them massive barrel- shaped bombs they were unaware they were about to make an epic journey to become the stuff of wartime legend and propelled those involved into national heroes.
