For three years, Laura, from Cramlington, Northumberland, has worked with people affected by the disease.

The 23-year-old was prompted to enter the sector after her stepfather, John Rudge, nearly died from stomach cancer when she was just 16.

She said: "My stepdad spent five months in intensive care and seeing the role that the nurses played in helping him make a full recovery prompted me to want to give something back.
