A former Durham University astronomy student has warned that a passing comet may have indirectly led to the Black Death.

Derek Ward-Thompson, now a lecturer at Cardiff University, has published a theory that a passing comet in the 13th Century may have caused the collapse of agriculture and plague to spread across Europe as people starved.
