The Government today vowed to spearhead a bid to defer repayment of debt for countries hit by the tsunami disaster.

As it was revealed almost 200 Britons were feared dead, Treasury officials said Britain will use its presidency of the G8 group of industrialised nations to help to provide long-term debt assistance.
