KENYAN superstar Martin Lel is one of four ex-champions returning for the 29th Bupa Great North Run tomorrow. Lel will be joined in the world's biggest half-marathon by fellow Kenyan Tegla Loroupe, winner in 1993, Benita Willis of Australia - who claimed the 2004 title - and Ethiopia's Berhane Adere, a winner two years later. The men's race is expected to see Lel continue African domination of the event and keep the title in African hands for almost two decades since Australian Steve Moneghetti won it with a world best performance of one hour and 34 seconds in 1990.
Since that victory, the halfmarathon has entered a much greater era of popularity, with the one-hour barrier breached on a regular basis and that, depending on the weather, should again occur on Sunday.See the full content of this document
