Byers Axed by His Neighbour ; Brown Suspends Colleague

LABOUR Chief Whip Nick Brown turned axeman and suspended Stephen Byers from the party, it emerged today. Mr Brown, whose Newcastle East and Wallsend constituency is next to Mr Byers' North Tyneside one, acted as calls were made for Labour to "disown" the ex-Cabinet Minister. The call came from Blaydon MP Dave Anderson. who spoke out hours after Mr Byers was suspended from the Parliamentary Labour Party over the "cash for access" scandal.

Ex-Cabinet ministers Geoff Hoon and Patricia Hewitt were also suspended after being caught up in a TV sting, discussing using their experience and contacts to influence Government policy - for a fee running into thousands of pounds a day.Mr Anderson said the PLP was "livid" about the lobbying row.
