Bez: Toon Boys Must Be Brave ; Old Boy Calls for Spirit of '92

Summary

JOHN BERESFORD has told Newcastle United's players that they need bravery in abundance in order to keep their survival fight alive ahead of the crucial clash with Portsmouth on Monday night. The popular former Toon full-back was there in 1992 at St James's Park when David Kelly's wonder goal sealed three vital points and proved to be the catalyst for Second Division safety. That day Bez watched on as an injured Pompey player just months before his switch to Tyneside, as Kevin Keegan transformed United from a laughing stock to an attractive European outfit. However, he feels the 2009 visit of Portsmouth could be even bigger. Beresford told the Chronicle: "When I'm back in Newcastle, I can actually feel the tension on the streets. "People are nervous, worried and anxious ahead of this game and you can see why.

"But you have to look at the situation and think it's not over yet. "People talk about bravery and for me that isn't going in for a 50-50 tackle or putting someone on the floor. "It's more about going out and making brave, positive decisions for the 50,000 Geordie fans who are desperate to see their side get something. "Make no doubt about it, this is a mustwin. And perhaps the problem is that Newcastle have forgotten how to win. "Now they need to remember though because this really is big." Amazingly, United's last home win came before Christmas when Damien Duff's lastminute goal sealed three points against Tottenham Hotspur.
