A NEW kind of "patch" that can mend a broken heart has been successfully tested by scientists. The tissue-engineering technique, which uses the body as a "bioreactor", may in future be used to repair damage caused by heart attacks. Cells lost from the heart do not grow back naturally, leaving the organ in a weakened and vulnerable state.

THERE needs to be a "radical review" of out-ofhours care to prevent European doctors flying to the UK to cover weekend shifts, the head of the Royal College of GPs (RCGP) said. TYNESIDE smokers are being reminded of the support available to them to help them go smoke-free as new figures show the success of local NHS Stop Smoking Services. Statistics recently released by the NHS Information Centre show that more smokers in the North East are being helped to quit by NHS Stop Smoking Services than anywhere else in the country.

LONG-TERM use of one of the most common treatments for breast cancer dramatically increases the risk of developing a deadly secondary tumour, a study has shown. Tamoxifen is the "gold standard" hormonal therapy, given to thousands of British women to improve their chances of surviving breast cancer. The drug, which prevents tumours being fuelled by the sex hormone oestrogen, blocks the ability of the sex hormone oestrogen to fuel the disease.

A VANDAL daubed graffiti onto the bonnet of a car. The car was parked in the Ringwood Drive area of Cramlington, Northumberland when it was damaged. Someone daubed the words OSKA on the bonnet of the white Ford Transit van in black paint before making off unseen.
