ANORTH EAST swimming and leisure centre has taken the plunge by recruiting its very first apprentice. Haltwhistle Swimming and Leisure Centre in Northumberland is one of the latest employers in the region to use www.apprenticeships.org.uk - an online system that matches apprentices with prospective employers - to strengthen the skills of its workforce.

A YOUNG City of Sunderland College hairdressing student has put his creative flair and natural abilities to great use, reaching the finals of a national competition. EXPERIENCED finance professional Allison Cowen is stepping up to take over as the new manager of Newcastle Building Society's Ponteland branch. Allison has worked for the Newcastle for more than three years, and has also worked for other major highstreet names in the financial services sector during her career. She has previously managed the Society's West Road branch in Newcastle, as well as working as a mortgage adviser covering several branches in Tyneside and County Durham.
